Foundation and infrastructure design

Geotechnical foundation design is the process of designing the foundation of a structure based on the geotechnical properties of the soil and rock beneath it. The goal of foundation design is to ensure that the structure is supported safely and securely, without excessive settlement or movement. The design process typically involves a geotechnical investigation to obtain soil and rock samples for laboratory testing, as well as field testing to determine the in-situ properties of the ground. This information is used to determine the appropriate foundation type, size and depth. Common foundation types include spread, raft and piled. RSK Geosciences’ specialist geotechnical team undertakes foundation and infrastructure design for a wide range of schemes.

Foundation reuse

Geotechnical reuse of existing building foundations is a process in which the existing foundations of a building are evaluated and reused for a new construction project. This process is often used in urban areas where land is scarce and expensive, and it is not feasible to demolish the existing building and construct a new one from scratch. The process typically involves a geotechnical investigation to determine the condition and capacity of the existing foundations. This investigation includes soil and rock sampling and laboratory testing, parallel seismic testing and field testing. Our geotechnical engineering team is experienced in the assessment and verification of existing foundations and ground conditions to determine the suitability of existing structures for reuse.

Ground hazard assessments

Geotechnical ground hazard assessment is the process of evaluating the potential for natural hazards such as landslides, rockfalls and soil liquefaction at a given site. This assessment is typically performed as part of a geotechnical investigation for civil engineering projects such as building construction or infrastructure development. The assessment involves analysing the geological and geotechnical characteristics of the site, including soil and rock properties, topography and hydrology. Our geotechnical team is experienced in geomorphological assessment of the surface signs of ground hazards and the subsequent investigation, including geophysical investigation to target site investigation works.

Slope stability

Geotechnical slope stability assessment is the process of evaluating the stability of a slope or embankment in terms of its ability to resist sliding or collapsing. This assessment is typically carried out by geotechnical engineers and involves analysing the soil and rock properties, groundwater conditions and other factors that can affect the stability of the slope. The assessment usually involves a combination of field investigations, laboratory testing and computer modelling to determine the safety factor of the slope. The safety factor is a ratio of the resisting forces to the driving forces that act on the slope. If the safety factor is less than one, the slope is considered unstable and may require stabilisation measures, such as reinforcement, drainage improvements or regrading. Geotechnical slope stability assessment is important in many industries, including civil engineering, mining and transportation. Our highly skilled team of geotechnical engineers can use field data obtained either by our in-house teams or by third parties to generate ground models and to test the slope stability of soil structures and existing or planned excavations and slopes. 

Earthworks design and supervision

Earthworks design is a service we offer that involves the planning, design and management of earthworks projects, such as site preparation, cut and fill, slope stability, retaining structures, drainage and erosion control. Geotechnical earthworks design is the process of designing and constructing earthworks such as embankments, cuttings and retaining structures for civil engineering projects. This involves analysing the soil and rock properties of the site to determine the stability and load-bearing capacity of the ground, as well as the potential for erosion or settlement.

The design process typically involves a geotechnical investigation to obtain soil and rock samples for laboratory testing, as well as geophysical testing to determine the in-situ properties of the ground. Following the investigation, two reports are produced:

  1. an earthworks materials assessment, to summarise the results and findings of the investigation and to evaluate the properties and characteristics of the soil to be used
  2. an earthworks specification, detailing various aspects, such as materials, methods, quality control, testing, health and safety, environmental protection, etc.
