The desk study stage aims to marshal information obtained from a site visit, published geological and historical ordnance survey maps and a database of environmental information to identify potential contamination linkages (source–pathway–receptor relationship) and conditions and constraints in the ground. Preliminary contamination and geotechnical risk assessments are presented along with areas of uncertainty.

The intrusive investigation is usually completed following the completion of the Phase 1 assessment. An intrusive investigation is typically required to investigate the potential pollutant linkages highlighted through the desk study process. The process helps to refine the site conceptual model and to provide data for site-specific risk assessment and foundation design. Intrusive investigations are undertaken using innovative and cost-effective techniques and may include sampling and monitoring of soil, ground gas, vapour or groundwater. The main techniques we employ are cable percussion and rotary drilling, machine-excavated trial pitting, hand-dug pits and vacuum excavation.

In-house RSK companies carry out in situ testing for infiltration testing for soakaway design and plate load and California bearing ratio (CBR) testing for pavement design, and we have access to laboratories for both environmental and geotechnical testing. The methods used on the site are tailored, so a small site where low-rise housing is required may need only a handful of boreholes to a depth of 5 m, but if the initial research into the geology of the site indicates that soft soil may be present to a depth of 4 m, we will use a large borehole rig and drill to a greater depth. Every site is bespoke, and we use our experience of the likely foundations required and visualisation of the sometimes complex geotechnical and environmental setting to determine the most cost-effective and efficient approach for our clients.
